The Personal Property Department has eight full- time Deputy Assessors who have received their Basic Assessment Training Certification from the West Virginia State Tax Department. Each Deputy is responsible for assigning value on items of Personal Property. Examples of personal property include automobiles, trucks, mobile homes, aircraft, boats, campers, motor homes; ATV’s, motorcycles and trailers. Three Deputy Assessors are designated in Commercial/Business Personal Property Assessment. Other areas of responsibilities:
- Anti-Rabies Clinics (held annually in June)
- Dog Tags Sheep/Goats (Coyote Fund Fee)
- Farm Use Vehicle Decals
- Homestead/Disability Exemption (based residence located on leased land)
- Military Exempt
- Mobile Homes on Leased Land
Your assessor does not set your property tax. Your bill is determined by multiplying a tax rate against your assessed value (60% of market value). Remember, the Assessor determines the assessed value and the levy rate is determined by the legislature (for the Board of Education), the County Commission and the municipalities. As a resident of Raleigh County, you are required by law to file an annual Personal Property Assessment based on personal property owned on July 1st of each year.
