The Appraiser’s office consists of five full-time residential appraisers and one full-time commercial appraiser. All appraisers have received up to date training and certifications through the West Virginia State Tax Department and the International Association of Assessing Officer’s training courses. They have attended many seminars and completed courses on land pricing, sales ratio, sales verification, the three approaches to value, mass appraisal studies and computer assisted land pricing training, just to name a few.
The Appraiser’s office is responsible for maintaining current market values on approximately 64,000 parcels of real estate in Raleigh County. Every parcel of real property shall be visited by a member of the Assessor’s staff at least once every three years to determine if any changes have occurred. Some circumstances require more frequent visits by our office, such as, property transfers, property splits, building permits for new construction, homestead exemption sign-ups, etc. If you are unavailable at the time of inspection, our appraisers will leave a notice of property review on your door. Please contact the appraiser at the phone number listed on the notice.
Our appraisers may have questions that, if left unanswered, could result in improper values and tax class. The information required to properly appraise these properties would have to be estimated using the best available data.
All appraisers will have picture identification tags with them at all times. County vehicles will be marked with “Raleigh County Assessor’s Office” decals. If in doubt, please feel free to contact our office at 304-255-9120 to verify.
For any questions you may have about the Assessment of your real property please feel free to contact the Appraisal Department at 304-255-9181, Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
